Overview

Dhaulagiri Round trek is one of the least-travelled and beautiful trekking routes of Nepal. It is located in the western part of Nepal with a maximum elevation of 5,360 meters. This trek encircles Mount Dhaulagiri (8,167 m / 26,795 ft.), the world’s seventh highest mountain. This trek is especially known for its high altitude, remote landscapes, challenging passes, and stunning views.

This trek offers the chance to experience both natural beauty and the cultural heritage of the Himalayas.

During the trek, you will witness views of the Mount Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Tukuche Peak (6,920 m), Nilgiri (7,061 m), and the Annapurna Range (8,091 m), and many other peaks as well.

The Dhaulagiri Round trek begins with a 25-minute flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, offering breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Mountain ranges. Then we will take a scenic drive from Pokhara to Darbang.

From here, the trek starts heading northwest through charming and remote villages like Kalleni, Naura, Bagar, Simal Kharka, Bhaisi Kharka, and Dobhan Kharka. These places are mostly populated by Magar people, who have a rich cultural heritage throughout the region.

Following that, we’ll continue towards the Italian Base Camp and Glacier Camp, eventually arriving at the beautiful Dhaulagiri Base Camp (4,748 m). You’ll be rewarded with incredible views of the Dhaulagiri massif and nearby peaks.

From the base camp, the trail rises rapidly to the French Pass (5,360 m), which sits between Tukuche Peak (6,920 m) and Sita Chuchura (6,611 m), offering breathtaking views.

The trail then descends slightly towards the beautiful Hidden Valley before ascending again to Dhampus Pass (5,244 m), which is located between Tukuche Peak (6,920 m) and Dhampus Peak (6,012 m).

From this high point, the trail gradually descends southeast through Alubari. The trek concludes with a journey to Marpha village. Here, a private jeep will be ready for us and we will take a scenic drive to Pokhara the next morning, where you’ll catch a flight back to Kathmandu.

The Dhaulagiri Round Trek route was first discovered and explored by the French expedition team in the 1950s, which resulted in the name “French Pass Despite its growing popularity, it remains one of the top and must-do treks in Nepal for anyone willing to travel beyond the well-established routes.

You Should Know Before Travel Expand All Collapse All

Yes. The Dhaulagiri Round Trek requires an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and a TIMS card (Trekkers' Information Management System). Some sections of the route that enter restricted zones toward the northern flanks may additionally require a Restricted Area Permit (RAP). All permits must be arranged through a registered Nepal trekking agency in Kathmandu before your trek begins.

While not legally prohibited on all sections, trekking the Dhaulagiri Round without an experienced licensed guide is extremely dangerous and strongly discouraged. The route crosses remote glaciated terrain, high-altitude passes above 5,000m, and sections with no rescue infrastructure whatsoever. Many operators and insurance providers require guided trekking as a condition of coverage. Hiring a government-licensed guide is non-negotiable for safety on this route.

The trek reaches its highest point at the French Pass at 5,360m, making it one of the highest trekking passes in the entire Nepal Himalaya. The route also crosses Dhampus Pass (5,182m) and spends significant time above 4,500m–5,000m throughout the northern glaciated circuit. This sustained exposure to extreme altitude demands serious acclimatization planning and physical preparation.

The two optimal seasons are April–May (spring) and September–October (autumn). These windows offer the most stable weather, best visibility of Dhaulagiri (8,167m) — the world's seventh highest mountain — and the most manageable conditions on the glacier and high passes. October is widely considered the single best month for the Dhaulagiri Round due to exceptionally stable post-monsoon skies and firm trail conditions.

On the French Pass (5,360m) and during glacier travel, temperatures can drop to -20°C to -30°C at night and rarely exceed 0°C to 5°C during the day even in optimal trekking seasons. At base camp areas around 4,750m, expect nighttime temperatures of -10°C to -20°C. A high-quality sleeping bag rated to -25°C, full down insulation system, and windproof outer layers are absolutely essential gear for this trek.

The classic route ascends from Beni through Babichaur and Darbang, following the Myagdi Khola valley through Muri, Jugepani, and Boghara to Dhaulagiri Base Camp (4,750m). From base camp, the route crosses the French Pass (5,360m) onto the Dhaulagiri Glacier, traverses to Hidden Valley (5,100m), crosses Dhampus Pass (5,182m), and descends through Marpha and Tukuche in the Kali Gandaki Valley before returning to Pokhara via Jomsom or completing a loop back through the Myagdi Valley.

Hidden Valley (approximately 5,100m) is one of the most extraordinary and otherworldly landscapes on any Nepal trek — a remote, high-altitude glacial plateau enclosed by towering Himalayan peaks including Tukuche Peak (6,920m), Dhampus Peak (6,012m), and Thapa Peak (6,012m). The valley feels genuinely beyond the reach of the modern world, with a surreal lunar quality that makes it one of the most memorable and photographed locations on the entire Dhaulagiri circuit.

Lower village sections offer very basic teahouses in Darbang, Muri, Boghara, and Jomsom with simple rooms, shared bathrooms, and minimal facilities. Above the lower villages and throughout the high-altitude circuit, full camping is mandatory. Your trekking agency provides all camping infrastructure. In Jomsom and Marpha at the end of the high circuit, more comfortable lodge accommodation is available as welcome relief after days of camping

While not legally mandatory, comprehensive travel insurance is completely non-negotiable for the Dhaulagiri Round Trek. Your policy must explicitly cover high-altitude trekking above 5,400m, emergency helicopter evacuation, glacier rescue, and full medical expenses. Given the extreme remoteness of the glacier and high-pass sections, helicopter rescues are logistically complex and extraordinarily expensive — potentially USD 8,000–USD 15,000 or more. No responsible trekking agency will operate in this terrain without confirmed insurance coverage for all group members.

The Dhaulagiri Round Trek passes through villages inhabited by some of Nepal's most fascinating ethnic communities. In the lower Myagdi Valley, you will encounter Magar villages — one of Nepal's indigenous hill communities with their own distinct language, shamanic traditions, and vibrant culture. Higher up, Thakali settlements in the Kali Gandaki Valley around Marpha and Tukuche offer a glimpse into the prosperous trading culture that historically connected Nepal and Tibet. The Gurung communities of the southern slopes add further cultural richness to the trekking experience.
